Symbiotic Sojourns

Two houses,
kept by hand.

Sunnyside Manor sits in the lake country at New London. Fort Carlson is up in the pines outside Duluth. Amanda looks after both, and answers the email herself.

The houses

Two very different places, about three hours apart.

The living room at Sunnyside Manor: a wood stove set into stone beneath a live-edge mantel, a grey sectional, dark floors and a chandelier.

Sunnyside Manor

New London, Minnesota

Built in 1912 as Sunnyside Hospital, and converted since into somewhere you would actually want to gather sixteen people. It sits on the Crow River with its own dock, a fire pit, and a deck wide enough for all of you — the New London water ski show passes in full view. Downtown is a walk away: coffee, dinner, shopping and a brewery.

  • Sleeps 16
  • 5 bedrooms
  • 4 bathrooms
  • On the Crow River
  • Private dock
  • Fire pit
  • Large bar
  • Wood stove
  • Dogs welcome
  • Willow tree
  • Walk to downtown
Worth knowing before you book
  • Part of the yard is fully fenced. With every gate shut, you can open the door from the bar or the kitchen and the dogs stay put. The rest of the yard is open.
  • Bedroom 3 has a trundle — one twin bed pulls out from under the other.
  • Bedrooms 4 and 5 are on separate floors with the stairs between them, and there is no door dividing them.
  • The full bed in bedroom 5 is a pull-out futon.
  • Beach towels are in the main floor bathroom.

Fort Carlson from the driveway: a hand-painted sign in a fieldstone flower bed, red Adirondack chairs, stacked firewood, and a single-level house with a red patio umbrella.

Fort Carlson

Duluth, Minnesota

New construction at the end of a quiet street, under mature trees. Comfortable beds, a complete kitchen, a grill and a table to eat at outside, and a lot of open ground for whatever you want to do with it. The fire pit is ringed in fieldstone with split wood already stacked beside it, which is where most evenings end up.

  • Sleeps 8
  • 2 bedrooms
  • 4 beds
  • 1 bathroom
  • Full kitchen
  • Grill
  • Outdoor dining
  • Fire pit
  • Firewood provided
  • Private entrance
Worth knowing before you book
  • The unit is one of three in a triplex, but it is completely private — its own entrance, its own driveway.
  • We own and manage the building and live next door, so if something needs sorting out, someone is there in minutes rather than days.
  • One bathroom, shared by up to eight guests.
